The true enemy of photographers

I've learned that the enemy of photographers isn't videographers (they're actually really awesome) but rather mosquitos. If you don't have the fortune of having a studio then unfortunately a lot of your work is out in the elements. It's easy to prepare for most things - if there's too much sun move to a shaded area or make your own shade, and if there's rain, well, cover your gear like your life depends on it and get really awesome shots. Easy to fix!
Mosquitos? Not so easy.
A particularly awful attack happened a few months ago while I was doing a portrait shoot for one of my clients. We decided to shoot it about 4:00pm as that seemed to be the only time that could work with our schedules and we didn't want to lose the sunlight. This was shot at Lake Eden, North Lakes, Moreton Bay.
At first the shoot went really well - the older girl was really understanding and listened to instructions really well.
As for the younger girl... we did struggle a little to keep her in one spot! It wasn't that we were boring or anything - everyone else walking by was just SO much more amusing! It's okay though - we had a secret weapon: bubbles! People can walk past all they want but nothing will ever beat bubbles in the competition for affection from a young child.
As the sun started to fade we moved to an open area where we figured we could get some sweet candid shots of the girls. Unfortunately being a photographer means that sometimes you have to lie on the ground to get the shots you want. This was one of those times.

Less than ten minutes later it hit me: It probably wasn't the smartest idea to shoot at Lake Eden so close to sunset. Turns out an army of mosquitos attacked me. The drive home was not pleasant but on the other hand the shots were amazing... making the attack of the mosquitos worth it!
Until next time,
